Where it all began...MANATUS

This anonymous manuscript map kept at the Library of Congress is a copy made around 1670 of a map that was probably drawn in New Netherland. The original map is usually dated ca. 1639, but may have been drawn as early as 1630. Learn more--take our Lower Manhattan tour.


The map depicts New York City's bay with the island of Manhattan jutting into the map from the right hand side.
